Kintsugi for beginners 19th May & 2nd June '18

This is a 2-day introductory course to kintsugi: a way of mending broken ceramics with lacquer and gold.

In traditional kintsugi, we use natural lacquer (urushi) and genuine gold. The genuine materials are harder to handle and costly when practising the technique. However I have not found a synthetic glue that can replace urushi to achieve a beautiful joinery, so even in this beginners session you will learn to use real urushi.

To shorten the whole process of a few months to 2 weeks, we will also use synthetic lacquer.

You are welcomed to bring more than 1 item. Depending on the simplicity/complexity of the damage we might be able to fix 2-3 pieces.

A damage in a narrow skinny shape might not be fixable. We will need to be able to reach the damaged area with fingers.

Also, we will not be able to fix big cracks nor cracks in unglazed surface in this session.

I will organise classes for more complex/bigger damages and the genuine kintsugi if you'd like to learn this further, but it is advisable to start with this course.
